You might be scrolling late at night, holding back tears, pretending to be strong for everyone around you, or maybe you’re just tired of pretending altogether. I’ve been there. I’ve felt that silence. And I’ve screamed inside of it. My name is Richard Cannon, and I’ve lived through more than most ever see. In 2019, I had major neck surgery two discs removed, artificial ones placed, plates installed. The pain was real and constant. In 2025, I faced heart disease. Years before that, I underwent tumor removals and reconstructive jaw surgery. And between the ages of 8 and 12, I experienced inappropriate abuse from my own father that I kept hidden until my late 30s. If I had spoken up sooner, others could’ve been spared. But I’m speaking now. I will never stay silent again. I’ve also felt the deepest pain a parent can endure. My son, Justin William Cannon, passed away at just six weeks old from congestive heart failure. He was born with Tetralogy of Fallot and pulmonary atresia. I held him, prayed for him, and let him go. That heartbreak is woven into every part of who I am. And every day, I show up for my other son, Christian Nelson Cannon, who has severe level three autism and is nonverbal. I’m his homeschool teacher, his therapy team, his voice. We do feeding therapy, ABA, speech therapy around the clock. And I would do it all over again because he is my greatest purpose. Lately, I haven’t been feeling like myself just worn out, overwhelmed, and honestly, mentally exhausted. Life has been moving a hundred miles an hour, and I’ve been juggling so much. But in the middle of it all, Christian walked over to me with his tablet, showed me a video of the SeaLife Aquarium at Grapevine Mills Mall, and without saying a word, let me know he wanted to go. That one simple moment from my nonverbal, autistic son hit me deep. So I paused everything. The stress, the to-do list, the noise I put it all down. We packed up and went to the aquarium, just the two of us. It turned out to be one of those days I’ll never forget. The bright lights, the crowds, and new sounds pushed Christian outside of his comfort zone. There were moments he was visibly overwhelmed, times when he pulled back, unsure or even scared. But I stayed close, walking beside him, narrating what he was seeing, and coaching him gently through each moment. I reminded him he was safe. I celebrated every time he got curious or smiled at something new. With every step, I saw him grow just a little more brave. It wasn’t perfect but it was real, and it was ours. This experience was more than a visit to an aquarium. It was a powerful reminder of what autism awareness truly looks like: showing up with love, patience, and an open heart even when things don’t go as planned. Neurodiversity means honoring each person’s unique way of experiencing the world, and I’m beyond proud of how far Christian has come. These are the kinds of moments that matter most. Father’s Day means more to me than most people realize. It’s not just a celebration, it’s a reminder of how far I’ve come and how much I’ve had to heal just to get here.
