They dug to the bottom of Antarctica… Using a giant drill like this one, scientists cut a ring into the ice, creating a core in the middle. As they drilled deeper, they’re traveling back in time, reaching ice that formed an estimated 1.2 million years ago…  For more optimistic science and tech, follow along! #animation #deepest #science #technology #historyfacts #antarctica #ice

This is the first baby cured with a custom DNA fix! The tool is called CRISPR. To use it, scientists use a protein, directed by molecules that act like GPS coordinates, to search through a cell’s DNA until it finds a match... then makes a cut... so they can stick in new DNA. It’s basically a text editor for genes! This baby had one tiny error in its DNA causing a life-threatening disorder called CPS1 deficiency. So they fixed that one error out of 3 billion DNA pairs. This is truly huge. This same tech is saving other lives too - like giving more standardized edits to people with sickle cell disease.

If you want to know more, we just published our newest Huge Conversations with… drumroll please… a scientist who won the Nobel Prize for discovering CRISPR, Dr. Jennifer Doudna! It was an honor to speak with her, and the conversation (and potential of CRISPR) truly blew my mind. Link in bio. I know there are internet cables that travel deep across the ocean floor… And I know they send information in the form of light down these tiny tubes of glass about the size of a human hair... But HOW does this video become lightwaves? You know every video is a bunch of 1s and 0s. So we need to alter the wave of light to represent 1s and 0s. Here's how. The amount of information we can send this way is INSANE. So when you’re scrolling, think about waves of light down glass tubes on the bottom of the ocean! The International Space Station is coming down in 2030…

It’s gonna crash into the ocean, on purpose. Here’s why… We’ve had this space house since 1998, where astronauts from around the world do science experiments in orbit. But it was only meant to last 15 years! Now, after more than 20 years, the ISS is… old. It’s getting expensive to maintain and needs periodic boosts to keep it in its orbit. So NASA and other international partners have officially decided that they will bring it down in 2030 - and replace it with something else. But this thing is the size of a soccer field! So how does this actually work? To learn what’ll replace it, follow along! #deepblue #animation #ocean #internationalspacestation

It looks like we’ve finally made artificial universal blood. Huge if true! Here’s what’s happening and why it matters for you… You might know your blood type. The letter means whether you have A or B sugars in your blood - or both or none. And then the plus or minus means whether or not you have a specific protein in there too. So you can’t just give someone any kind of blood. It has to be compatible! But now, scientists are testing a new, artificial blood that can be used on anyone! Here’s how…  The goal is to have these artificial cells saving lives by 2030! For more optimistic science and tech stories, follow! #science #animation #stem #medicine

These new contact lenses let you see infrared light, see in the dark, and see with your eyes closed... Embedded inside the lenses are these special nanoparticles that absorb infrared light we normally can’t see. That infrared light is then converted into wavelengths of light that we CAN see. The lenses are transparent, so you can see normally and detect infrared light. People who tried these out said they could see that infrared light even better with their eyes closed. The scientists were even able to code certain wavelengths of infrared light so you see them as different colors! BUT what you see in infrared is extremely blurry. But the researchers estimate the current version would cost about $200 per pair to make. And they’re trying to increase the range of the electromagnetic spectrum we could see! They want to help colorblind people... and also say you could send secret messages to people wearing them… so... Would you want them?? Why do we only ever see one side of the moon? The moon completes one rotation around its own axis in the same amount of time it orbits earth. The two are perfectly in sync! But it wasn’t always that way... When the moon formed, likely from a collision with earth, it was a hot molten object spinning wildly, changing shape, pulled by Earth’s gravity. As it settled into its orbit, Earth’s gravity pulled on its closer edge, making it into an oval shape. This created an uneven pull as it rotated on its axis. Over time this constant tug on the Moon’s bulge… caused its rotation to slow, and eventually match Earth’s… This is “tidal locking,” an effect that’s actually quite common and found in most large moons in our solar system. Because of this, humanity didn’t see the back of our own moon until 1959. And turns out it looks COMPLETELY different! If you want to know WHY, follow along! #animation #moon #science #technology #historyfacts

He let the world’s most venomous snakes bite him over 200 TIMES... and scientists are happy about it. Let me explain… When snake venom enters your bloodstream, in minutes or hours, it can cause tissue and neurological damage. The only way to counteract this is with antivenom, which attaches to the components of venom and blocks it from binding to tissues, blood cells, or nerves. The problem is… Now, scientists believe this could hold the key to an "unparalleled" breakthrough in antivenom. 5 people just saw a new color. How? In the back of your eye are special cells that let us see color - cones. There are three kinds, each sensitive to different wavelengths of light. So if you make a map of the relative activity of each of the cone types, you can see the natural range of colors our eyes see. Weirdly, there’s no natural color that stimulates only one of the types of cones - because its sensitivity curve overlaps completely with the others, so another cone type is always also activated. Scientists at UC Berkeley just created a device that images where the cone cells in a person’s retina are and then stimulates individual ones using tiny amounts of laser light while compensating for any motion. They were able to stimulate JUST the M cone cells. In other words, they created a brand new color. I haven't seen it (of course) but they say it appears blue-green but is way more saturated than you could see normally... The goal is to learn more about how we see color, one day correct colorblindness... and seeing more colors is pretty cool. Some scientists want to create basically a Noah’s Ark ON THE MOON… Let me explain. Right now it’s estimated that anywhere from 200 to 2000 plant and animal species go extinct every year. And we already use remote places like this global seed vault in Norway as a backup for biodiversity. But even our most remote facilities face threats - climate change, natural disasters, and global conflicts. So some scientists want something more secure. Enter our frozen lab on the Moon, where they say we could store seeds, reproductive cells, and DNA for endangered plant and animal species. They want to put this lab inside an empty lava tube at the lunar south pole where they say the frigid -196° Celsius temperatures meet the minimum requirement to store most animal cells long-term. And the lava tube would protect the samples from cosmic radiation, micro meteors, and temperature fluctuations. Huge if true!
