There were State Troopers stopping and looking into each car. I noticed a car pulled of to the side so when I was allowed past. I rolled down my window to check on them. What I saw was a sacred mom trying to put on a brave face for her kids. Me: hey are you ok? Her: I think so. Me: would you like me to pull over and wait with you? Her: I would really appreciate that. Me: you got it! I’ll be right up here and will be recording the entire time. Once the officers let her go she pulled up next to me and said “thank you”. With tears in both of our eyes I told her I was happy to help. Kindness is free. Your privilege is free for you…but it comes at a cost to others. Self care takes work. It doesn’t happen “naturally” taking a day to treat myself means coordinating pick up and drop off for the kids. Someone to feed and check on the animals. Someone to be there to intercept emergency intakes (there were two). And least of all, an effort to be with myself in the present and let my brain focus on things beside work and kids. It’s not easy which is why so many of us put it off. It feels like another task or chore… and in some ways it is. But as caregivers it’s a necessity.
