There aren’t many artworks that excite me as much as golf related artworks. Golf is one of the more slow paced, social sports which is why I painted a group of four people enjoying a late last hole. @swatch gave me a simple brief: ‘Pink Ocean’. ‘Say no more’ I replied back, knowing exactly what I wanted to paint after receiving the new Pink Ocean Swatch in collaboration with Blancpain. If you look closely, you’ll obviously see me wearing it but if you look even more closely, you’ll see that I painted the surfer wearing this watch on her right arm too. I used only three colours to make the wave-like background which is of course inspired by the two shades of pink and white on the strap and dial of the watch. ‘Big Blue’ was an experimental piece made before I painted ‘Baby Blue’. I wanted to see what effect scale would have on the same painting. Would this saturated blue look darker and more intense when it’s big ? Would it still be a punchy colour on a small canvas? This is the second largest artwork I made in this collection but I must say, it feels like the biggest due to its deep colour. I feel a sense of zen inside a storm. The wind is blowing hard, the waves are big and yet you’ve still got it all under control. Every collection I make features an F1 related artwork and given the name of this collection is ‘WET’ there was one obvious location to choose: Monaco. You don’t have to know much about Formula 1 to know that the race in Monaco is the highlight of every year, packed with nostalgia, glitz and glamour. For that reason I painted Senna in his Marlboro McLaren, taking full focus on a grey road with a blue ocean and a (small) mega yacht in the background. I can’t explain how many different compositions I sketched up before settling on this rather simple layout, inspired by a previous ‘Monaco Warmup’ I painted earlier this year. Of course I had to feature the classic Monaco watch from @tagheuer to celebrate their role in Formula 1 for the next few years. Despite looking the same from far away, each snowflake is completely unique. You may find the same thing is true about the miniature figures in my paintings. From far away these paintings look completely abstract. A simple, white painting with many black dots. As you come closer, though, you realise that these dots are actually just intricately detailed paintings of people skiing down a mountain. ‘Small Snowflakes’ is also a reference to one of my largest snow paintings called ‘Snowflakes’ which featured 69 different characters. I love this painting. Part two of my collaboration with @Swatch where I made an artwork inspired by the new Blancpain x Swatch timepiece named ‘Blue Lagoon’. I made sure to colour match the blue pigments of the watch band and face and let me tell you, the artwork looks so good in person. Working with Swatch was a childhood dream come true and merging it with my WET collection couldn’t have come at a better time. ‘Deep and Meaningful’ otherwise known as ‘D&M’ is referred to a conversation or relationship with heaps of substance usually between close friends or couples. Deep sea divers can’t really communicate via speech but rather hand gestures. Knowing and trusting your diving partner is key because the deeper below the surface you go, the more dangerous things get. Communication plays a crucial role in any relationship, especially when you enter the deep waters of a committed relationship. You probably won’t believe me if I told you that these are in fact printed editions of my original artworks. They’re just so good that it looks like the real thing. After I complete an artwork, I hand it over to my friends over at @standishandco who scan these works using some very expensive high end cameras that hover over each artwork for hours on end, picking up details not even I can see. These digital files are then handed over to my printing partners @leftbankartgroup in Brisbane. They print each of the 69 editions on canvas using the highest grade inks to ensure the colours and textures of each artwork are replicated perfectly. Each print then gets stretched before being framed using Tasmanian Oak that is stained in white to look exactly like the original artworks. That’s not all. I approve each print individually before signing each of the 69 copies by hand. There is no doubt that these prints are made with love, care and attention to detail just like every artwork I make in my studio in Sydney. Only 69 editions will be made of each of these which gives you the opportunity to own a replica of an artwork that otherwise will never be for sale. Some artworks are planned in advance and others simply fall into place. I originally planned on using this canvas to create a public pool piece that would have featured swimmers but due to the complete mix of blue hues, I feared the tiny figures would get lost. For a couple of weeks this artwork sat in the studio untouched until the idea came about to add the two green strokes. I knew immediately that this pool piece was to become the first and only golf related artwork in this collection. As is usually the case I wanted to keep the artwork’s title punny with a touch of sexual innuendo but ‘Wet Hole’ was slightly too far. As such, ‘Water Hole’ stuck. What I love most about this piece is that there is a sense of serenity despite the chaotic mix of blues that clash onto what seems to be two islands forming a golf course. That’s life 🏄🏽‍♂️🏄🏾‍♀️🏄🏼 ‘Blue Water High’ was a fun piece to create. My idea was to remaster ‘Swell Day’ which I made two years ago. This time, however I blended a couple of blue tones on the canvas using my mega brush, which created the perfect backdrop to paint more than 13 surfers of all kinds and colours. Inspired by the colours on the ‘Pink Ocean’ Blancpain x Swatch this artwork features a tiny surfer riding a wave. If you look closely, you’ll see her wearing the watch too! As a kid, the only Swiss watches I could afford were from @Swatch and it was a childhood dream of mine to collaborate with them. Only two things in life move fast. Porsches and life itself. Although I don’t often show it, I can do more than just paint. Last year I made a body of work called ‘911 WHAT’S YOUR EMERGENCY’ which featured 9 drawings of different luxury cars with bold text painted over it and to celebrate that collection I made this artwork. I have a scary obsession with Porsches and photography too- especially Polaroid images. This polaroid style is a new creative direction I’m venturing into and I can’t wait to make more.
