This is still the video people most reference when they meet us in person. Telling us how much this little saying “find your texture” has helped them, which is pretty neat! The phrase Find Your Texture is specifically for very steep icy runs. I know the camera doesn’t make this run seem steep but it was. Looking over the edge and looking straight down a black diamond icy slope is scary especially when you are 5, as you can hear in her voice in the beginning. On steep runs you are able to see where the snow has sluffed off and left a flat, icy patch of snow. You can turn on ice but it is a lot harder to dig in your edge, especially on a snowboard. Even more difficult for Cashy being so light, it’s very tough to set an edge on an icy patch. That is why you find the texture on the slope. So you can turn into your edge and not lose control. The texture is the bumps or soft powder spots on the run. Not to be confused with moguls which are usually hard, icy, big mounds on a run. We have done a lot of sensory learning with Cash since she was little so she understands what texture is. Once I told her to look for it she was ready to conquer a new feat and kept repeating it to herself every time she got on some steep slopes during our trip. Sometimes it’s the little phrases we learn that can make all the difference in retaining what we learn. #snowboarding #teaching

There are 3 major things I love the most about this video of young 6 year old Cashy. These moments in this video make us so proud, as her parents, of her skill and demeanor. First: You’ll hear her say “I might need a speed check” as she’s dropping into the run. Then shortly after I yell to her to check her speed and she does the most perfect toe edge check on top of the last roller which set her speed perfect for the whole jump line. Why it’s a proud moment is because she recognizes this need all on her own and till I reviewed the footage, I had no idea she was already ahead of me. Second: The very last jump where she lands back seated but keeps her momentum to pop right back up. What I love about this moment is how she knew she was slightly off axis due to the heel side carve to get to the jump thus sending her off the jump off her heel edge which caused her legs to kick out. Why this is a proud moment is you can see that she didn’t freak out mid air or try to correct it and look like a wet cat. She stays calm and lands with the momentum and goes to slide on her bum yet she doesn’t stop she just keeps her momentum forward and pops right back up. Third: The very end when obviously Hype Mom and myself were far more stoked and losing our minds. Cashys calm cool collective demeanor is so admirable here. Like she channeled her inner Elle Woods “What? Like it’s hard?” and was so overly calm with accomplishing such a monumental moment in her snowboarding. Why I love this is because it comes across like she had been thinking about this long before she tried it. She did the whole jump line near flawlessly but you can tell she’s proud of herself and quite possibly slightly embarrassed by our reactions lol. Such a fun moment to have been able to see live and one no doubt Whitney and myself will NEVER FORGET! Drag lifts aren’t as easy for us snowboarders. Especially the young ones trying them for their first time. This was from when Cashy was 5 and we were down in Chile. She was so confident about trying and was quickly surprised how hard they actually are especially with very little weight. That lifty though, what an awesome dude. He was trying his best to get her successfully setup and right as he thought she was good, she biffs it and he panicked. Rightfully so as you can hear Hype Mom did as well. Trying to hook that disk under her tiny little legs and then having it pull on her light weight body left very little room for her to control her board. Spoiler, she never actually made it to the top. The video ends as we were going to grab on and she ate right after that next pole. This was the last time she’s ever tried a drag lift. I hope this season we can give it another try as I’m confident she will do just fine with her more advanced skill. We have never shared this before as we figured people would report us but we’re over that now. Hopefully this helps others as well as bring a smile to your face! #snowboarding #lol #learning

A dance I’m sure to never forget! At the time, she had no idea I was trying to match her every turn. This was also when she was 5 and her turns were far more predictable for me to try to synchronize with her. Just so happened that Whitney captured it perfectly and knew right away we needed to put it to @ABBA Dancing Queen! This was in January of ‘22 when little Cashy was 5 years old and she had just started to be comfortable with both of her edges. A slower pace of riding back then but I think we should try to do it again this season now that she’s even more controlled on her board. I suppose we will see if others agree with me or not. -Nick #snowboarding #dancing #cuteness

Toe edge when learning to snowboard is usually the most difficult to learn. Most snowboarders when starting out learn heel edge first as that’s easier to learn back against the slope of the mountain and look forward to where you are going. Toe edge is, you guessed it, the exact opposite. There are numerous different techniques and phrases we used to teach our little Cashy (who’s almost 8 years old now) how to be comfortable on her toe edge. This just focuses on one and that’s “Toes down heels up” kind of like trying to get on your tippy toes. Tippy toes tippy toes let me see your tippy toes! Using that phrase was simple enough for Cashy to understand and allowed her to try toe edge without catching her back heel edge, that is until the end of the clip. I hope this tiny little snowboard lesson we used for our daughter can help any other snowboarders learning how to ride this upcoming season! #snowboarding #teaching #cutenessoverloaded

Trying out a new trick on the @REVBALANCE board of hanging ten or pretending we’re on a longboard riding the nose. The trick to this is to get your knees bent and then stack your shoulders over your hips over your ankles. This will allow you to keep your weight centered so if you need to adjust, your bent knees allow for the micro adjustments. As you can see, even here falls can happen but the way she just bounced back and kept trying was impressive. I thought for sure she would be done after that fall and it didn’t even phase her. This was our first time really trying this but I think she will get it quickly. Doing a balance workout in this direction helps with your front to back balance instead of the traditional side to side balance these boards are made for. RevBalance makes a longboard style board called the Swell 2.0 that would be perfect for this style of balance training but we don’t have that board so we are just improvising with our 101 v2. Definitely a fun trick to try if you have one of these boards! #balanceboard #balancechallenge #wholesome

#ad When your Halloween makeup takes over an hour, make sure you have snacks like @Dave’s Killer Bread Organic Snack Bars! Cashy’s favorite is the Oat-Rageous Honey Almond variety. You can pick them up at your local grocery shop or nationwide at stores like Target. #ad #daveskillerbread

It still baffles us why people don’t look outside of the United States for ski or snowboard trips. Not only is it cheaper than most resorts across the board but you also get the cultural experience to go along with it. Looking at the lift tickets alone is enough reason to go to Europe or Japan for your annual ski or snowboard trips. The price comparison in the above graphic is for an adult day lift ticket at Stubai Glacier in Austria and Park City Resort in Utah. We actually priced out for our family of 3 and the price difference is even more staggering. Especially because kids under 10 ride for free at Stubai; where as at Park City kids 5-12 years old cost $187 a day. With the above mentioned about us pricing out for our family of 3, this is why our lodging cost was for a 2 bedroom hotel. We had a 2 bedroom hotel room in Stubai with half board - meaning breakfast and 5 course dinner was included. I couldn’t find a 2 bedroom hotel in Park City that also included the same meal options so that would be an additional cost. My comparison price of lodging in Park City was for the Grand Summit which was an equal room to our lodging in Austria (4 stars) with 2 bedrooms. That said, not only is it cheaper to go to Austria for lodging but you can also score 2 meals a day along with your stay at most hotels in the Tyrol Valley. Lastly, we priced our flights out of NYC as it gave a fairly equal distance of travel both directions. You can find cheaper costs to both destinations depending on the time of year you search but our search for comparison was over Thanksgiving weekend which is when we travelled to Austria. If we priced out of our small hometown, there was a bigger difference in price in favor of Park City but we also live close enough to Utah that we would just drive down if we were going to vacation there. Hope this post inspires you to look around the globe for your next ski or snowboard trip and if you ever have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask. Happy shredding friends! #snowboarding #skiing #travel

The banked slalom is by far one of the most fun things to do on a snowboard. It tests control of speed at the same time testing your quick reactions from edge to edge. The minute our little Cashy tried one at 5 years old, she looks for them on ANY mountain we ride. I can’t blame her either because they are so so fun. What’s wild between these 2 ages of her riding is the speed and control she has at 7. Her frontside berms she’s almost throwing surf hack style turns on. However you can hear at 5, it’s all so new to her and she says some pretty funny things going through the turns. You can hear in my breathing on her 7 year old part that I’m already struggling to keep close to her on these courses so who’s ready to watch her hit these this season as an 8 year old? Hopefully I can keep up! -Nick #snowboarding #snowboardingtoddler #snowboardinggirl #snowboardingisfun #bankedslalom #girldad #bogusbasin #boiseidaho

How to get on and off the chairlift with your new little snowboarder. Lifting from the underarms allowed me to properly set her down against the back of the chair and have one arm around the back and immediately one arm in front holding her on. With the above riding position you perfectly positioned for the dismount. Coming off your hands are already where they should be to lift from the underarms and safety exit the chair. While exiting, make sure you lightly set your little down keeping roughly a 20% lift in case they catch an edge or a foot slips off you can quickly correct and reposition all while riding off smooth and safe. This was the most effective way for us however there are a few other ways we have seen this done. We’ve seen other parents use different backpacks and harnesses that can help with the lifting on and off. We tried one and it didn’t work as well for us as the way we do it in the video. Additionally, we noticed the backpack would prevent her from sitting all the way back in the chair and for this old sketchy 2 person chair, that made me a little uneasy. With the new season about to kick off and a bunch of new shredders anxious to start their snowboarding journey, I hope this helps a few parents as I know I was a tad nervous my first time. #snowboarding #teaching #LearnOnTikTok

Learning the how to push and glide on your snowboard is huge. As a rider nothing is worse than people that have no control over their board in the lift line and keep slamming into you. It is also a giant indicator of control or lack of. We worked on this a lot from the very beginning. How to be respectful of other people’s stuff but also control. Being able to control the board one footed not only helps you get through a lift line, on and off the lift but also helps when you need to get through flat sections on the mountain. If you are new to the sport, slow down and remember to master the basics. This simple but monumental task will also help with your control while riding as well because a lot of snowboarding is controlled through your front foot. #snowboarding #teaching #learning

First park line of this season! Seems like being on a board all summer has helped her for this upcoming season! As the first jumps she has hit this season we were reminding her to go slow, feel it and just get her feet back under her. That first few weeks back on snow is always a moment of remembering where you ended the previous season but also working back up to that before you can push progression. The biggest thing to take away here is her confidence. She is coming in to the boxes with a sureness that was there at the end of last season and fire to keep pushing. So pumped to be back on snow and so excited to see where the season takes all out riding! #snowboarding #stoked #austria🇦🇹
