Travelling with eczema & TSW is HARD but getting to see my family & friends after 3 years was 10000% worth it. If you too have a skin condition and have travel plans this year, here are my recommendations: 〰️ 1. Bring your own laundry liquid. There’s nothing worse than needing to wash your clothes and not being able to because the laundry detergent offered at your hotel or local laundromat is full of fragrance and harsh chemicals. BYO laundry liquid & hand wash if you need to, to avoid any unnecessary irritant exposure! 〰️ 2. Bring your own bedding. For the same reasons as above, bringing your own sheets / pillowcases is a great way to ensure a good nights sleep without the worry of your skin being exposed to anything that could cause issues. It always feels rude getting rid of the nice hotel set up but trust me, it’s worth it 😅 〰️ 3. Swim in the ocean If it’s accessible to you and clean enough, swimming in the ocean is a great way to keep your skin under control! Ensure you’re not heading out in the sun during high UV times (sunset is ideal) and spend around 30-45 minutes soaking in the salt water. Even if you have to wear a fun thermal hat like me 🤠 〰️ 4. Wear different clothes when you’re out and about to the ones you wear at the hotel. This is because when you’re out exploring there are all kinds of irritants which land on your clothes and you don’t want to be bringing them into your place where you’ll be relaxing and sleeping. Irritants can be anything from car pollution to a candle being burnt near your or someone nearby spraying their deodorant. If you can smell it, it has landed on you or your clothes. All these different things landing on our clothes/skin increase our chance of having flares. If you’re really worried about them the easiest way to get rid of them is to have a shower and the majority of irritants will wash away. Share these at home Dermatologist treatments with someone you know with eczema. 1. Take the shortest, coolest showers or baths you can tolerate. Hot, long showers increase evaporative water loss and worsen dry skin 2. Apply Vaseline or other thick cream or ointment right after bathing. This will lock in moisture. Even better if you can put cotton pajamas on right after moisturizing. 3. Avoid fragrance in soap, detergent or skin care. Fragrance commonly triggers eczema. 4. Other common triggers include dust mites if you suffer from dust mite allergies. Leave your bed unmade for an hour after waking, use dust mite covers and wash bedding regularly to decrease mites and night time itching. 5. Wearing wool and other irritating materials offen worsens eczema. Stick with cotton and silk 6. For severe flares try bleach baths (1/4 cup bleach in full tub of water). Oatmeal baths are helpful too (buy premade oatmeal baths or grind oats in blender and put in hosery and soak in bath like a tea bag) 7. If you live in a dry climate, keep a humidifier in the rooms you spend the most time in. If your eczema is interrupting your sleep and activities and not responding to home treatments, seek treatment from your dermatologist. It’s TSW awareness day, so I wanted to open up the conversation to what this condition really is. I see a lot of people getting confused at the name TSW, and simply disregarding it because it doesn’t make sense. TSW is not a withdrawal - it’s a condition as a result of dangerously thin skin. It’s well known to not only patients but the medical community, that topical steroids thin out skin. But what does that actually mean? Our skin has multiple layers of thickness, and each time steroids are applied - they slow down the skill cell reproduction and can kill the skin cells on top, leaving us with less layers. After continuous use of steroids, our skin eventually becomes so thin that it’s susceptible to everything & we reach a point where we must use steroids to mask as the top layer of our skin. Once we discontinue steroid use, our skin doesn’t have a mask and so we enter this stage of topical steroid withdrawal. After the initial withdrawal symptoms which could last up to a few weeks, our skin then enters a stage where it needs to regain thickness (hello, flaking) and this process could take years or even decades. That’s why there’s a direct correlation between the amount of steroids used / strength of steroids and how long it could take for you to heal.
