I tear up a little every time I get to this scene in the ride now 🥹 Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway was the first ever attraction dedicated to the two starring mice who started it all. There were several other Mickey Mouse rides that were proposed before this one years earlier, including a rollercoaster through the 1930s black and white shorts and another ride that toured Disney studios (which MMRR borrowed some ideas from). The perfect picnic scene always reminds me of my own dear husband Eliot. Once, during a particularly tough season when we weren’t sure if our careers were going to pan out, we went on this ride together and were stuck in this scene for a bit. I looked at him with tears in my eyes and he, with that unspoken language coupled have, just wrapped his arm around me and held me closer. That’s when I knew we’re going to make it happen one way or another. Pete is the oldest continuing Disney character, and he’s changed his name almost as much as he’s changed his leg. At any given time he’s gone by Bad Pete, Big Pete, Big Bad Pete, Black Pete, Bootleg Pete, Dirty Pete, Mighty Pete, Pee Wee Pete, Peg Leg Pete, Petey, Sneaky Pete, and Piston Pete. I also love that his wife’s name (once upon a time) was Peg, in honor of his beloved peg leg 😂 Animator Norm Ferguson developed Pete as a contrast to Mickey… large where Mickey was small, strong where Mickey was weak. Pete was first voiced by Walt Disney himself, and then later by Pinto Colvig in 1931 who introduced his iconic cackle. Billy Belcher, after having landed the role of the Big Bad Wolf, was then cast as the official voice of Peg-Leg Pete in 1933, establishing the 1920s/30s villainous speech patterns for Pete and continuing to voice the character until the 1960s. There’s a reason it’s not well lit in that back corner of Pirates of the Caribbean 😂 Rapunzel was actually pretty tame for Rolly Crump, his style was heavily influenced by hippie culture and so embracing… ahem… “natural” portraits was prevalent in his art. He was the lead designer of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride in Walt Disney World, so his style was everywhere in that attraction, including this portrait in Winky’s pub. As for Redd, I love that Marc turned her story around from what it was in those earlier years. She, in his mind, went from being sold 😬 to becoming a fabulous pirate queen living well in her “retirement.” The portrait we see in the ride today was likely painted by Ed Kohn, but it’s almost identical to Marc’s concept. Anne Bonny and Mary Read were real-life pirates that Marc researched when developing the attraction. 🌭Why did Disney’s Stitch ride fail? Stitch’s Great Escape in Magic Kingdom featured an amazing Stitch animatronic. But it still had a reputation as one of the worst attractions at Magic Kingdom. And it all has to do with the origins of this ride. Disney World tried to fix a huge mistake by retheming a problematic show to Stitch, trying to make it more family friendly. Disney took Alien Encounter and replaced the scary alien with Stitch, but much of the experience remained the same. But they ended up making an attraction that was a tonal mess. Silly yet terrifying. Stitch’s Great Escape ran from 2003 - 2018, before being permanently closed in 2020. However, it still has a reputation as one of the worst Disney World rides ever. I wonder how that would work in the Haunted Mansion 🤔 the Audio Animatronic wouldn’t last long if it was within reach of guests. Perhaps they would have had a Cast Member handing the pens out. It’s likely the feasibility of the idea wasn’t a factor in not pursuing it, but the storyline wasn’t the strongest one either. There is a king at the table in the ballroom, though, and I wonder if perhaps that was a compromise to still incorporate the idea. The concept of having Neptune rise out of the water was nixed pretty early on in the planning for the Jungle Cruise. The text I showed is from an early prospectus when they were trying to sell the idea of Disneyland to investors so they would become sponsors. It was not called the Jungle Cruise yet, it was still the True Life Adventure ride at that point. They changed the name later on, but kept the Adventure part, and that’s where we get “Adventureland.” True Life Adventures was a documentary series featuring animals in their natural habitats. It made sense to name the ride after that when they were planning on having real animals in the river ride, but when they switched it up to fake animals instead, the name changed as well. The Jungle Cruise has given some “free souvenirs” out over the years, including maps of the attraction and “survival sack” ziplock bags. And for a few brief periods of time (during promotions) the Haunted Mansion did hand out 💀certificates (but please don’t ask CMs for them now). Warning: this one gets a little grim 😬 I’ll never look at those suitcases the same in the lobby after knowing this 🧳 👀 Obviously, the main purpose of the suitcases is to tell the story of the Hollywood Tower Hotel. They are illustrating the creepy reality of everyone in the hotel disappearing when lightning struck the tower on October 31, 1939. But I think the suitcases are also connected to a Twilight Episode in Season 1 called Mirror Image where a suitcase mysteriously moves from one location in the room to another, making a woman question her sanity/reality. And I like to think that these suitcases could also subtly be a reminder to people about the mysteriousness of what could be inside them, considering this crime was so well known in the 1930s. The suitcases were the same ones used in the filming of the preshow film you see later in the library (and they have a few stories of their own, but we’ll save that for another day). I do want to mention that there are some people who claim that Winnie Ruth Judd was framed (possibly by Jack Halloran), as she insisted she was innocent and that she acted in self defense. But there are others who doubt her story. The salt box is watching 👀 I may get a little too excited about that prop because I just think it’s so clever how the Imagineers added it to tie into Pinocchio’s story 🧂🫏 Pinocchio Square was planned in the earliest versions of Fantasyland, back when Alice in Wonderland was still going to be a walk-through, and Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride hadn’t entered in the picture quite yet. They ended up removing Pinocchio Square for the 1955 version, but when they were redoing Fantasyland in 1983, no doubt the Imagineers went back in Disney history and revisited that idea, integrating it with Pinocchio Village Haus to make a new iteration of a “square.” Aladdin’s Oasis was in the spot of the Tropical Hideaway from 1993 to 2018, beginning as a dinner show (like it’s predecessor the Tahitian Terrace) and eventually becoming a meet and greet space. The lamps and carpets are a nod to this former space, and the mosaic magic carpet and tile work at the entrance are left over from it as well. Also… RIP Big Thunder Ranch. Step back in time to 1991 and experience a rare look at Disneyland’s PeopleMover gliding through the Star Tours show building! This classic Tomorrowland attraction gave guests a unique overhead view of the park, including a glimpse inside the bustling Star Wars-themed adventure. If you’re not staring at rocks in Epcot, you’re missing out on the full Disney experience 🪨 👀 I especially love the ones in Italy, that they were just pieces of a leftover concept. I’m not, however, happy that we lost a significant portion of the Italy pavilion due to budget cuts and that’s why it’s so small 😔 When I first read that Cast Member manual for the China Pavilion, it sounded like the rocks were closer to the gate because of the wording. I didn’t even think about this massive structural art piece behind me 🤦‍♀️ My daughter was a good sport about the whole thing and was excited to see how thrilled I was about these rocks that literally no one cares about but me 🪨 Something I love about Disney history is how much thought goes into the design of all of these pieces that make the parks what they are. The more I’ve studied and learned throughout the past 19 years, the more fascinated I’ve become by the Imagineers and how much they care about the details of their work. Brilliant design by Imagineering to have such a subtle marker representing the entire purpose of the attraction 👏👏👏 This is not the only object in the queue that references time. There’s a (relatively useless) sundial on the right hand side (that is supposed to show wait times) that of course alludes to the passing of time. The soundtrack also has quite an impressive array of songs that reference loss, memories, day, night, and more that are all subtle foreshadowing for what’s to come (some are only instrumental versions of the songs, but the lyrics to them are still meaningful even if they aren’t sung). It’s a tradition in construction to mark the cornerstone of a new building with an engraving, inscription, date, or even a time capsule. In earlier construction practices, the cornerstone stone was what they used to base all of the rest of the construction off of, which made it literally the foundation of the whole building (and therefore significant).
